As a school that believes it has a commitment to improving the means to have a meaningful impact, Nova School of Business & Economics (Nova SBE) continues to lay the foundations for a sustainable way of life. That’s why it reintroduced the pioneering pilot project for a mandatory container deposit scheme located at the Carcavelos Campus – the only in the country.

In partnership with TOMRA, the well-known Norwegian multinational specializing in recycling solutions, Nova SBE launched, in July 2019, alongside the Portuguese Minister of Environment and Energy Transition, João Pedro Matos Fernandes, the first pilot project for a mandatory container deposit scheme in Portugal located in both the Municipality of Cascais and the Carcavelos Campus.

By partnering with TOMRA and the Municipality of Cascais, Nova SBE assumes the commitment it made when it signed the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. It also intends to further its role to play by contributing to the knowledge and testing of alternative solutions that allow for the execution of this mandatory deposit scheme (which will officially kick-start in 2022).

The on-campus pioneering equipment enables consumers to receive a monetary refund against their recycling deposit, thereby diminishing the environmental impact and promoting recycling. To get their refund, consumers must download the myTOMRA app, register, and connect myTOMRA to their PayPal account (or create a new PayPal account). Users can receive the €0.15 deposit electronically via PayPal or donate it digitally to the Community Center for the Parish of Carcavelos.
