Bachelor's in Ocean studies

Find a meaningful career

Graduates in Ocean Studies are equipped to work in organizations dedicated to the ocean at national, European, and global levels, conducting scientific research or addressing specific issues, such as marine pollution control, or creating opportunities in support of the development of any area of the blue economy, such as blue bioeconomy and biotechnology, marine renewable energies, or financing for the blue economy.

This degree is relevant for those who wish to manage the spatial planning of marine and coastal areas or develop work in areas that explore operational and observational oceanography.

The ocean experts emerging from this degree also could work in the rehabilitation and restoration of coastal and marine environments, promoting biodiversity and carbon sequestration.

This degree will enable students to continue their studies in the 2nd Cycle, particularly in study programs specifically dedicated to the ocean, such as the Master's in Law and Economics of the Sea – Ocean Governance, a joint master's program from NOVA School of Law and NOVA SBE, Management Master's programs, International Master’s in Management, Master's in International Development and Public Policies (offered by Nova SBE), as well as the Master's in Marine Living Resources: Science, Technology and Society and the Master's in Maritime Logistics, both offered by NOVA FCT.

You can tailor you own gap year, if it fits your goals and dreams - it's the perfect plan.

The project winner will receive a scholarship (5.000€ for a single application or 6.500€ when traveling in pairs) that financially supports your gap year.

For the winner(s) and applicants that present the 10 best projects, and that have been accepted as a master’s degree student at Nova SBE, it will be possible to delay the beginning of the master’s degree for one year so as to carry out their project.
