Admission Criteria

PhD in Economics and Finance
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree diploma in Economics, Finance, or other related fields and should have a good level of competence in English. If you don’t have a Master’s Degree but expect to obtain it within the year, your application can also be considered.

PhD In Management
Applicants should hold a Master’s. Your degree can be in any field (e.g., the sciences, arts, and humanities). Still, if you do not have previous coursework in business studies, you may be required to take additional coursework (at Nova SBE or elsewhere). If you don’t have a Master’s Degree but expect to obtain it within the year, your application can also be considered.

Yes, you are welcome to apply even if you have not finished your graduate studies yet. However, it would help if you were confident of finishing your graduate studies by the end of the upcoming summer term and will need to provide the final diploma or certificate before the beginning of classes.

No, there is no age limit. Your application will be evaluated based on your application documentation.

PhD in Economics and Finance
No, you do not need to find a supervisor in advance, and we do not expect you to have a research proposal. However, in your statement of purpose, you can describe your research interests and potential supervisors.

PhD In Management
No, you do not need to find a supervisor in advance. However, it is mandatory to submit a research proposal upon your application and to include potential supervisors in your letter of intent. If pre-accepted in the PhD program, you will be required to secure a supervisor. Candidates may approach potential supervisors through the contact form available on the Faculty section of the Nova SBE website.

No, Portuguese is not required. The program is completely taught in English.

Application documentations

No, uploading a GMAT or GRE test is mandatory. You can upload additional evidence demonstrating your analytical/mathematical skills. However, such evidence is no substitute for GMAT or GRE.

An ideal referee for your letter would be a professional with experience in the academic field. Recommendation letters should be signed by the referee and written on letterhead paper.

No, recommendation letters are sent directly by the referees. During application, you will be asked to specify the names and emails of your referees.

No, only two.

The English language certificate is not mandatory, but you may submit it if you wish to. Candidates, however, need to be comfortable with the English language to participate in the program.
