Admission Criteria

PhD in Economics and Finance

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree diploma in Economics, Finance, or other related fields.

If you don’t have a Master’s degree but expect to have defended your thesis before the start of the program (usually September 1st), your application can also be considered.

 

PhD in Management

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree diploma in Economics, Management, Statistics, Psychology, or other related fields. Still, if you do not have previous coursework in business studies, your supervisor may require additional coursework (at Nova SBE or elsewhere).

Yes, you are welcome to apply even if you have not finished your graduate studies yet. However, if you expect to have defended your thesis before the start of the program (usually September 1st), your application can also be considered. You will need to provide the final diploma or certificate before the beginning of classes.

No, there is no age limit. Your application will be evaluated based on your application documentation.

No, you do not need to find a supervisor in advance, and we do not expect you to have a research proposal in advance. However, in your statement of purpose, you can describe your study-area(s) of interest and potential supervisors. Candidates may approach potential supervisors through the contact form available on the Faculty section of the Nova SBE website.

No, Portuguese is not required. The program is entirely taught in English.

Application documentations

Uploading a GMAT or GRE certificate of results is mandatory. Results should not be older than three years. However, applicants who hold, or will shortly hold, one of the following Nova SBE Master’s degrees are not required to submit GMAT/ GRE results:

  • For PhD in Economics and Finance: Master’s in Economics, Master’s in Finance, International Master’s in Finance.
  • For PhD in Management: Master’s in Business Analytics.

An ideal referee for your letter would be a professional with experience in the academic field. The Recommendation letter itself should be signed by the referee and written on letterhead paper.

No, recommendation letters are submitted directly by the referees. During application, you will be asked to specify the names and emails of your referees. The instructions are available at the application platform.

No, only two.

The English language certificate is not mandatory, but you may submit it if you wish to. Candidates, however, need to be comfortable with the English language to participate in the program.
