The Economics group at Nova SBE established the school in 1977 as the Faculty of Economics of the New University of Lisbon. Today, the group comprises 25 permanent professors, along with 20 visiting professors and seven postdoctoral researchers.
Faculty members conduct and publish research in top academic journals across various fields, including development economics, political economy, education, labor, health, industrial organization, environment, public economics, macroeconomics, and econometrics. Their work has successfully attracted numerous large research grants. Economics faculty also lead five of Nova SBE’s nine knowledge centers, as well as the newly established Nova SBE Public Policy Institute, playing a key role in collaborations with external stakeholders and disseminating scientific evidence to both national and international audiences.
Currently, the group is also actively involved in teaching approximately 40 PhD students, 320 master’s students, and over 600 undergraduates in Economics and Public Policy. Many of our graduates go on to build distinguished careers in business, government, academia, and international organizations.
