The General Council of NOVA University Lisbon (UNL) elected Professor Paulo Pereira today, following a public hearing, as the new Rector of the institution.
A faculty member of NOVA Medical School (NMS) at UNL, Professor Paulo Pereira led a research group focused on degenerative retinal diseases. He previously served as Vice-President of the Foundation for Science and Technology from 2012 to 2015 and was Director of the Center for Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences at the University of Coimbra.
He currently coordinates the iNOVA4Health unit, which specializes in biomedical research. As a professor, he founded and leads the international master’s program NBR – NOVA Biomedical Research, recognized for its pedagogical model; he was instrumental in establishing doctoral programs; and he directs several curricular units.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he led NOVA’s task force, strengthening the University’s response to the outbreak both nationally and through high-impact European projects.
