Nova SBE launches a new institute dedicated to Public Policy
Society | 13 September 2024 Nova SBE launches a new institute dedicated to Public Policy

As part of its strategic plan to create new institutes, Nova School of Business & Economics (Nova SBE) announces the launch of its new institute dedicated to Public Policy: Nova SBE Public Policy Institute, on September 20th, at 2:30 PM on the Carcavelos Campus, in an event open to the public. The event will be held in English due to the expected number of international guests.

With a municipal emphasis, the Nova SBE Public Policy Institute will begin its activities focusing on public finance, productivity, housing, and the use of artificial intelligence in public policies.

With a clear mission to increase societal knowledge, promote respect for diverse opinions, and contribute to the strengthening of public institutions, the new institute at Nova SBE presents itself as a center of excellence that seeks to respond innovatively - and through differentiating approaches - to the emerging needs of contemporary public policies not only in Portugal but also globally.

In a time where informed dialogue and critical thinking are more important than ever, the Nova SBE Public Policy Institute commits to empowering citizens and leaders so that, based on scientific and independent knowledge, they can face the challenges of today’s world with policies based on ideas and not ideologies.

Addressing real problems and sharing best practices globally, this institute will promote excellent research through its knowledge centers: specialized institutes with Nova SBE faculty that come together to promote independent research that will contribute to academic knowledge and generate tangible impacts on society.

Assuming a hybrid position between the public and private sectors, the institute functions as a neutral space for experimentation, ensuring its total independence.

FOUR PILLARS OF ACTION

To drive informed and enlightened Public Policies for the development of societies, the Nova SBE Public Policy Institute will act in four distinct interdependent areas:

  • Research, creating interdisciplinary knowledge of excellence on the most pressing challenges;

  • Education, offering rigorous academic programs for the development of leaders (current and future) and the empowerment of Public Institutions with greater and better knowledge;

  • Action, promoting research with impact beyond academic relevance and fostering social entrepreneurship and innovation;

  • Communication, serving as a bridge between academia, the public sector, and civil society.

INCLUSIVE LEADERSHIP. INFORMED DIALOGUE. ANALYTICAL RIGOR

Placing knowledge at the center of public debate to foster informed discussions with concrete impacts on society is one of the main objectives of the new institute at Nova SBE, which, through its actions, aims to promote inclusive leadership by facilitating dialogue between various stakeholders—including political forces and ideological blocs—to combat polarization and foster collective problem-solving.

Emphasizing the importance of analytical rigor and quantitative approaches in designing and implementing effective public policies, the Nova SBE Public Policy Institute aims to contribute positively to public institutions through education, training, and research, participating in creating new generations of academics and public policy professionals.

‘The Nova SBE Public Policy Institute represents an effort to bring academia (and Nova SBE specifically) closer to the processes of defining, designing, and evaluating public policies. We intend for our institute to function as a neutral space for experimentation that places independent (and research-based) knowledge at the center of public debate, contributing to the creation of inclusive leadership based on analytical rigor. We also aim to empower leaders of public institutions to face the challenges of today’s world,’ says Pedro Oliveira, Dean of Nova SBE, adding that ‘our goal is to create tangible impacts on society, contributing to the improvement of public institutions and the development of a new generation of academics and professionals in the field of public policies.’

Luís Cabral, Academic Director of the Nova SBE Public Policy Institute, reinforces that ‘the institute aims to be an inclusive and proactive center that connects academic knowledge with practice on the ground so that all stakeholders can have a voice in the development of public policies. We are confident that, with this approach, we will contribute to a future where public policies are more effective, inclusive, and aligned with the real needs of society.’
