Founding member of NSBE, where he served as Deputy Dean (1982-85) and taught courses on Macroeconomics, Trade, Intern. Monetary Economics; served as Vice-Rector (1986-90) and Rector (1990-94) of Univ. Nova de Lisboa; was Vice-President (1995-96), UNICA, network of universities of European capital cities; Vice-President (1992-93), Economic and Social Council; member (1994-06) Board of Trustees, Luso-American Development Foundation; chaired the Board of Directors (2004-06), and the Supervisory Board (2006-15) of TAP; served as non-executive member on boards of other companies.
