José Tavares é professor de economia na Universidade Nova de Lisboa, investigador afiliado no Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) em Londres. José Tavares obteve o seu doutoramento em Economia na Universidade de Harvard, especializando-se em Economia Política e Macroeconomia. Além de Nova, José leccionou na Universidade de Harvard, Universidade da Califórnia Los Angeles (UCLA), e Universidade Católica Portuguesa. A investigação de José centra-se num vasto conjunto de temas, incluindo a relação entre democracia e crescimento económico, o custo macroeconómico da discriminação de género, e o papel da globalização no combate à corrupção, tendo sido publicada em revistas académicas, incluindo o Journal of Monetary Economics, a Review of Economics and Statistics, o Journal of Public Economics, e volumes editados pela Harvard University Press, MIT Press e Princeton University Press. José foi co-organizador de "Investir no Futuro: Colaborações Universidade-Indústria em Portugal e nos Estados Unidos" e "Portugal": Opções Estratégicas no Contexto Europeu", e fundador da Sociedade Portuguesa Americana de Pós-Graduação. O trabalho académico de José tem sido comentado em jornais como Time Magazine, New York Times, Handelsblatt, La Repubblica, Expresso, e Público, e discutido em sites especializados de op-ed como Vox.eu e Eurointelligence. José foi orador convidado no Simpósio Dahrendorf 2011 sobre "O Futuro da Europa".
