Alex Armand é professor Associado na Nova School of Business and Economics, e membro residente na NOVAFRICA. Os seus principais campos de investigação são Economia do Desenvolvimento e Avaliação de Políticas. O seu trabalho atual centra-se no efeito das transferências monetárias relacionadas com a educação nos resultados domésticos, no efeito do envolvimento da comunidade local na gestão dos recursos naturais, no papel dos meios de comunicação social na redução de conflitos, e no saneamento em bairros de lata urbanos. Tem liderado projectos de investigação na Macedónia, Moçambique, Índia, Bolívia, Guatemala e Honduras.
