Last week, we introduced you to Marta Gomes, the determined and self-driven student who is pursuing her Master’s in Management at Nova SBE. Now it is time for you to meet another one of the Nova SBE Fellows: Filipe Valadas, a Master’s in Management student at Nova SBE.

Born in Lisbon, Filipe always had a fascination with Healthcare and Biomedical Technology, so he fought his way through Biomedical Engineering, calling it the science for excellence behind Medicine. But this was a tough journey to make. Filipe graduated in Biomedical Engineering while, amongst other things, working as a tutor for students on subjects such as Calculus and Programming courses back at FCT-NOVA. His dedication and hard work eventually paid off.

In between responsibilities and his drive to pursue his dream, Filipe even found the time to study and practice sports and, though he was proud of his academic achievements, he decided to value his personal growth. That’s why he decided to create the NOVA Korfball Team, being its coach and captain. They won national championships and other titles, going as far as to participate in European competitions. Filipe is very proud of this because having started from nothing, alongside his athletes and friends, they achieved things that were nothing but dreams at first. With this initiative, he learned how to be a leader, to be the one that stands for the group, working alongside his team members to achieve the proposed goals. Proof of that might be EBIMed, (http://www.ebimed.pt/), the Biomedical Engineering Junior Enterprise that he founded alongside some of his colleagues, which has now many ongoing projects and has engaged over 100 students from different backgrounds, all of them dedicated to learning and developing solutions to increase the quality of life of patients.

When considering the future, Filipe says there is plenty to look forward to. There will be many challenges, but with hard work and dedication he can aspire to be the best version of himself because as he puts it:

“I’ve never been the brightest of the students, but I do know that with true effort and hard work I can achieve anything I want to, and in ten years I know that I will still think that’s the best motto to live by.”

Filipe Valadas: a dreamer, a maker, a conqueror.
