Study on "Assessment of the macroeconomic impacts of the brewing sector"
Science Outreach | 18 October 2021 Study on "Assessment of the macroeconomic impacts of the brewing sector"

The brewing companies believe they have unique conditions to contribute to the country's economic recovery, but ask the State to solve "the problem of fiscal equity" that the sector is subject to when compared to its counterparts in Spain, which pay less than half of the special tax consumption (Imposto Especial de Consumo - IEC) - Also vis-à-vis the wine sector in Portugal which,  on the top of being exempted from IEC, has also a reduced tax rate at 13% VAT, while beers pay 23%. The study "Assessment of the macroeconomic impacts of the brewing sector" conducted by João Duarte and Pedro Brinca calculates that the impact of this additional VAT rate of 10 percent alone "generates a loss for Portuguese society" of up to 5964 million euros. The objective, as the name implies, was to quantify the impact of the beer industry on the Portuguese economy, including all economic activities related to and impacted by beer.
