To help its community grow boldly, Nova School of Business & Economics (Nova SBE) believes it is its duty to encourage the students’ personal and professional success. Tomás Barreto, a Nova SBE Master’s in Management student, is proudly such an example having become, on September 6, the Under 23 European Rowing Vice-Champion.

Alongside his colleague Simão Simões, Tomás Barreto, a freshman of the Master’s in Management at Nova SBE, became the Under 23 European Rowing Vice-Champion, in Germany the BLM2 class, at the Under 23 European Rowing Championship.

When asked about this conquest, Tomás commented: “I am very pleased with our performance and achievement, especially taking into account the obstacles we had to overcome. During lockdown, I had to reinvent myself and cope positively with adversity in order to keep physically and mentally prepared to (eventually) race in the summer. Fortunately, the race happened, and the final result was rewarding. Now, I am looking forward to being part of the Nova SBE Rowing Student Club. I believe that coastal rowing offers the perfect connection between the School (a team that works/rows together towards a common goal) and the surrounding environment (a challenging sea of opportunities)”.

Born in Porto, Tomás completed his Bachelor’s in Coimbra and enrolled this year in the Master’s in Management at Nova SBE. Passionate about rowing, Tomás not only practiced rowing in Coimbra, but it is also part of the Portuguese Rowing Team. He now joined the Nova SBE Rowing Student Club – an open club (to students, staff, Alumni, and faculty) that was launched in partnership with the Portuguese Rowing Federation (Federação Portuguesa de Remo – FPR) and Oeiras Marina, and is run by the Nova SBE Students’ Union.

It is important to note that last year, in September, the Nova SBE Rowing Student Club became the national champion in the C2x Masters Class (men). The Club also won second place, represented by Nuno Anta (CGG 2018-19), who teamed up with Pedro Vicente – Professor at Nova SBE.

The competitive results that the club and numerous other Nova SBE teams and students have achieved have taken Nova SBE sports to a whole different level and prove how willing these pioneers are of taking their name and the school’s name beyond.

This is our Nova Way of Life: a school as an open ground for a new way of learning, sharing, and growing together in which we are proud to have students like Tomás.
