On October 24 and 25, the Nova School of Business & Economics (Nova SBE) Carcavelos campus will again host the prestigious Estoril Conferences. This annual event brings together thought leaders, academics, and experts from various areas to discuss crucial contemporary issues shaping our future.
The theme for the 9th edition of the Estoril Conferences is ‘Time to ReThink’. The event aims to foster dialogue towards collective action to overcome the most pressing global challenges. The five pillars guiding the reflections of numerous national and international leaders invited to attend are Peace, Policies, Planet, Artificial Intelligence & Technology, and Health & Longevity.
Organized by Nova SBE and NOVA Medical School, this year’s Estoril Conferences will, for the first time, partner with Harvard’s Digital Data Design Institute (D^3), a prestigious institute dedicated to studying the impact of new technologies on the world. The event is co-organized with the Municipality of Cascais and Turismo de Portugal.
Context and Relevance
The year 2024 marks a period of profound transformation. Not since World War II have there been so many armed conflicts and devastating wars (United Nations, 2023). This year will see more elections and consequent geopolitical changes (The Economist, 2023), and demographic transitions intersect all changes and transitions as the population over 65 years old begins to surpass the population under 18 years old (WHO, 2023). Technology and artificial intelligence (AI) continue to develop exponentially while environmental degradation reaches alarming levels, with six of the nine planetary boundaries already exceeded (Science, 2023).
In this context, the Estoril Conferences 2024 propose an incisive and comprehensive debate on the most pressing and impactful challenges for the future, emphasizing the need to reassess our thinking and actions to drive collective progress.
