On November 10, 1977, the Faculty of Economics of Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Nova School of Business & Economics/Nova SBE) opened its doors in Campo Grande, Lisbon.
Last Monday, January 30, the school decided to pay tribute to the Nova SBE Installation Committee and welcomed Professor Abel Mateus; Professor Aníbal Cavaco Silva; Professor and former Vice-Rector of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, José António Girão; Professor and former Rector of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Manuel Pinto Barbosa and Professor and former Director of the Faculty of Economics of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Diogo Lucena, to its Carcavelos campus. Representing the founder, former director of Nova SBE, and former rector of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Professor Alfredo de Sousa, were his daughters Marta Castro and Maria João Sousa.
More than the foundation of a new school, Nova SBE's Installation Committee was the driving force behind a new chapter in Portugal's education history. With extensive international experience, each member brought innovative ideas that translated into a commitment to academic rigor, a hallmark of the school from an early stage. This mark endures to this day, reflected in the excellence advocated daily in a constantly growing school: today, 48% of the teaching staff is international.
To honor each of the school's founders, Nova SBE has placed the name of each of Nova SBE's Founding Committee members on a crossing point for teachers, staff, and students.
Nova SBE's website will soon have a page dedicated to its founders.
Also present at the tribute ceremony were the Mayor of Cascais, Carlos Carreiras; the President of the Faculty Council, Maria João Carioca and her members; the Vice-Rector of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Prof. João Amaro Matos; current and former Presidents of the Scientific Councils; and the school's faculty and staff.
