Luís Brites Pereira is Associate Professor (Adjunct), NOVAFRICA resident researcher and, until recently, the deputy-director of the ex-Center for Globalization and Governance at Nova SBE. Luís was educated in Portugal and South Africa (see Education for details) and is specialized in International Economics. His academic activity has comprised management responsibilities, research and lecturing, with the latter including the MBA programs of Wits Business School (Johannesburg) and Católica-Lisbon/Nova SBE (The Lisbon MBA).

As a post-doc Research Fellow at the ex-Tropical Research Institute, he contributed to the understanding of developmental challenges in African-Lusophone countries. His other research, meanwhile, has focused on the governance responses to economic globalization challenges, and has been published in peer-reviewed academic journals such as Governance, International Journal of Emerging Markets and Open Economies Review. He has also provided consulting services to international institutions such as the Central Bank of Cape Verde and the Macao Monetary Authority (China), as well as national institutions.

Beyond academia, Luís was an economic advisor at the Ministry of the Economy and Innovation, with respect to the internationalization strategy of Portuguese S&T policy. Subsequently, he also served in public office as the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, which included the responsibility for the design and oversight of Portugal’s international development policy.
