Internationally recognized for the quality and impact of his research, Miguel Ferreira is among the 100 most prolific authors ever published in the top three finance journals and is the most cited Portuguese economist of the 21st century.

His research explores central themes of modern finance, including corporate, personal, and sustainable finance, and seeks to understand how a competitive and inclusive financial system can contribute to social and economic progress.

Miguel Ferreira’s expertise in corporate finance and capital markets is particularly relevant for executives and companies facing critical decisions about investment, capital structure, and value creation. His ability to translate academic findings into actionable insights positions him as a key voice in bridging academia and the business world.

At Nova SBE, he holds the BPI | Fundação “la Caixa” Chair in Responsible Finance, serves as Vice-Dean for Faculty & Research, directs the Finance Knowledge Center, and coordinates the Finance for All program, recognized as the “world’s best financial literacy initiative in the Best Non-Profit Adult Education Project category”. 

Throughout his career, Miguel Ferreira has received several awards for research and teaching, and his work has been published in top-tier academic journals such as the American Economic Review, Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, and Management Science.

In addition to his academic work, he serves as an independent board member of BPI Asset Management and a scientific advisor to the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation, actively contributing to the connection between academic knowledge and social impact.

He regularly collaborates with companies, financial institutions, central banks, and public organizations as a consultant and independent expert.

Miguel Ferreira holds a Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA), a master’s in economics from Nova SBE, and a bachelor’s degree in management from ISCTE.
