José Tavares is professor of economics at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, affiliate researcher at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) in London. José earned his doctorate in Economics at Harvard University, specialising in Political Economy and Macroeconomics. In addition to Nova, José taught at Harvard University, University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), and Universidade Católica Portuguesa. José´s research focuses on a broad set of issues, including the relationship between democracy and economic growth, the macroeconomic cost of gender discrimination, and the role of globalization in countering corruption, and it has been published in academic journals, including the Journal of Monetary Economics, the Review of Economics and Statistics, the Journal of Public Economics, and volumes edited by Harvard University Press, MIT Press and Princeton University Press. José was co-organiser of “Investir no Futuro: Colaborações Universidade-Indústria em Portugal e nos Estados Unidos” and “Portugal: Strategic Options in European Context”, and founder of the Portuguese American Post-Graduate Society. José´s academic work has been commented in newspapers such as Time Magazine, New York Times, Handelsblatt, La Repubblica, Expresso, and Público, and discussed in specialized op-ed sites such as Vox.eu and Eurointelligence. José was invited speaker at the 2011 Dahrendorf Symposium on “The Future of Europe”.
