Funded by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia – and the Aga Khan Development Network, MozambES has brought together scientific research, local knowledge, and on-the-ground action. The project represents a collaboration between Nova SBE, Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), and Nova IMS, demonstrating how academic expertise and community engagement can combine to create lasting environmental and social impact.
Over the course of the project, MozambES has achieved significant results:
- Approximately 18 hectares of mangroves have been replanted, with high survival rates.
- More than 200 community members have been actively involved in conservation activities.
- Rotating savings and credit groups were established to empower local communities financially.
- An innovative Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) model was piloted, linking conservation incentives to community benefits.
The project has shown that environmental restoration and human development are complementary goals. By combining rigorous scientific research with local knowledge and practices, MozambES has generated sustainable value for both nature and communities.
The mangroves of Nhangau are not only essential ecological assets—serving as nurseries for marine species, providing coastal protection, and sequestering carbon—but also central to the well-being of local communities. The project demonstrates that effective conservation requires inclusion, participation, and co-creation with those who depend on these ecosystems.
Looking ahead, while the official project timeline is ending, the MozambES team is actively seeking ways to continue and expand this work. We remain committed to exploring new opportunities, partnerships, and funding avenues to ensure that mangrove restoration and community empowerment continue to thrive.
