This seminar will address one of the most persistent challenges in U.S. public transit systems: the “last mile problem.” As ride-hailing markets mature, governments are exploring strategies to improve accessibility and increase transit ridership by leveraging synergies between ride-hailing and rail services. Peter Christensen will present results from a large-scale field experiment conducted with Uber riders in Chicago, Washington D.C., and the San Francisco Bay Area. The study evaluates whether subsidizing ride-hailing trips to connect with rail transit can reduce external costs from private vehicle use. Findings show that first/last mile subsidies can increase rail-connected trips while reducing private vehicle miles traveled, yielding significant social benefits.
