The third edition of "Estado da Nação, Educação, Emprego e Competências em Portugal, 2023" (State of the Nation: Education, Employment and Skills in Portugal, 2023), an annual report by Fundação José Neves, was published today.

A team from the Nova SBE Economics of Education Knowledge Center, coordinated by Ana Balão Reis and Luís Catela Nunes, has contributed to the production of chapter 7, found in the section titled "A Educação Enfrenta Enormes Desafios" (Education Faces Great Challenges).

This chapter focuses on the conclusions of the most recent research from our Center, as well as on studies based on data from international tests and surveys that allowed us to compare the reality of education in Portugal with that of other countries. It tackles the following themes:

"Portuguese students' performance has improved since 2000, but inequality between students remains the same"

"Teachers are pivotal for the educational achievment of students"

"Portugal has the oldest teacher population of all European Union countries"

"A very small number of students want to become teachers"

"Career stabiliity is important, but a mirage for many teachers"

"Teachers' wage progression stagnates because of the time it takes them to ingress and to progress in the teaching career"

"Portugal is the country from the OECD where teachers report higher levels of stress"

"Teacher satisfaction in Portugal is low, but society values teachers more than they think."
