Learning loss during the pandemic: a recovery proposal - parliamentary hearing
News | 20 December 2022 Learning loss during the pandemic: a recovery proposal - parliamentary hearing

Ana Balcão Reis, Pedro Freitas and Susana Peralta were invited for a joint hearing in Parliament, in the context of the monitoring and evaluation of the Learning Recovery Plan 21|23. This plan, implemented to address the challenges that the pandemic has caused in the learning process of Portuguese students, has been addressed by the three researchers through the presentation of their study “Learning loss during the pandemic: a recovery proposal”.

The researchers pointed out, to deputies from all parliamentary groups, that the structure of the assessment tests that were used in former years doesn't allow for comparisons across time, which prevents comparisons between students' current performance and their performance before the pandemic. They also highlighted the fact that more information is needed on how many students are benefiting from the learning recovery plan and on the traits of those students. To conclude, they recommended the use of data from the 2022 assessment tests to identify which are the students who are in most need of support, in order to chanel extra resources towards them, namely through tutoring or summer schools.

Professor Margarida Gaspar de Matos and DGECC’s General Director Nuno Rodrigues were also part of this hearing, having presented the development of the Observatory of Socioeconomic Skills.
