et’s Beat the Machine: When AI Predictions Motivate Individuals
Consumers increasingly encounter AI-generated predictions across contexts, from fitness to education. Prior research has largely examined whether people trust and rely on algorithmic advice but less is known about whether such predictions can also serve as motivational triggers. We propose that AI predictions can motivate consumers more than equivalent predictions from human experts. Specifically, we introduce the task domain as a key moderator and argue that individuals are especially motivated to outperform the machine on physical tasks, relative to cognitive ones. We further aim to examine the psychological mechanism driving this effect. This research makes important contributions. Theoretically, it extends the algorithmic advice literature by repositioning AI not merely as a decision aid, but as an active motivational force. Practically, it offers actionable insights for the design of AI-powered feedback systems in health, education, and performance contexts, suggesting that how predictions are framed and attributed can meaningfully influence consumer effort and outcomes.
