Nova School of Business & Economics (Nova SBE) expresses its profound sorrow at the passing of Edmund Phelps, recipient of the 2006 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences and one of the most influential figures in contemporary economic thought. 

Throughout an exceptional academic career, Edmund Phelps distinguished himself through his pioneering contributions to macroeconomics, particularly in the study of the relationship between inflation and unemployment, economic growth, innovation, and societal prosperity. 

Awarded an Honorary Doctorate by NOVA University Lisbon in 2003, through Nova SBE, Edmund Phelps maintained a close connection with the School for more than two decades, participating in academic initiatives and sharing his remarkable insights with students, faculty, and researchers. 

His intellectual legacy – marked by rigor, originality, and a steadfast commitment to the role of innovation and creativity in economic development – will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations. 

At this moment of profound sadness, Nova SBE extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues, and joins the international academic community in mourning his loss. 

Through his friendship, generosity, and contribution to the intellectual development of our academic community, Edmund Phelps will remain forever in the memory of Nova SBE.
