Miguel Ferreira (Vice-Dean at Nova SBE) has been appointed National Ambassador for Financial Literacy as part of the new network of ambassadors created by the European Commission for this area.
The appointment, made by the Portuguese government through the Ministry of Finance, is part of the European Union’s Financial Literacy Strategy, which aims to strengthen cooperation and coordination among Member States to promote the structured sharing of best practices and increase the impact of public financial education policies across the European Union.
Equipping citizens with the knowledge and skills to make more informed, responsible, and sustainable financial decisions is the main goal of this European Commission initiative. In Portugal, the network also includes Mafalda Rebordão (an economist trained at Nova SBE and currently responsible for Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence strategy for the United Nations at Microsoft) and Francisca Guedes de Oliveira (Board Member of Banco de Portugal and Nova SBE’s alumna).
Miguel Ferreira is a Full Professor and holds the BPI – ”la Caixa” Foundation Chair in Responsible Finance at Nova SBE, where he also serves as Vice-Dean, Director of the Nova Finance Knowledge Center, and Coordinator of the financial literacy program – “Finance for All”. He is also an Affiliated Researcher at the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI) and the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR). In 2025, the financial literacy project he leads (FINANCEforALL) was awarded an ERC Advanced Grant, the first granted in Portugal in this panel.
Internationally recognized for his research in personal finance, corporate finance, and sustainable finance, Miguel Ferreira is the most cited Portuguese economist since 2000 and ranks among the 100 most prolific authors worldwide in the three leading scientific finance journals. Throughout his career, he has combined academic excellence with a strong commitment to promoting financial literacy, both nationally and internationally.
