On November 17 and 18, the Digital Data Design Institute at Nova SBE and NOVA Medical School co-hosted the Blockchain Confluence 2025, the 1st IEEE International Conference on Distributed Ledger Technology, held in the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
The event brought together researchers, practitioners, industry leaders, and policymakers to discuss the technological, economic, and societal implications of blockchain and distributed systems.
Across two days, participants engaged in keynotes, debates, academic presentations, and thematic discussions covering topics such as the intersection of AI and blockchain, the future of decentralized finance (DeFi), governance and regulation of distributed technologies, blockchain culture, digital assets, and applied use cases, and new research directions emerging from academia and industry.
As part of the program, the conference also hosted the XRPL Commons Insights workshop, delivered under the Ripple Blockchain Initiative, providing participants with hands-on exposure to the XRP Ledger ecosystem and its growing role in driving real-world blockchain applications.
This conference was organized as part of BLOCKCHAIN.PT, co-funded by the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) and the European Union through NextGenerationEU, with the goal of positioning Portugal as a reference in blockchain research and innovation.
