Five reasons to choose the PhD in Economics | Finance at Nova SBE:
International academic standards
Our four-year program follows international best practices and aims at taking students to the frontier of knowledge in their field. This is achieved through a sequence of generic advanced courses, during the first year, and field courses, during the second year. Students take part in our exciting research environment from the end of the first year, when they are expected to start conducting their own research.
Faculty members at Nova SBE are experienced in advanced training, specifically in advising doctoral students. 23 PhD students graduated during the last five years, and we are currently hosting 29 PhD students. Please see our recent graduate testimonies.
During the first year, a series of research workshops gets students acquainted with the research agenda of the faculty. This facilitates starting a research paper in the end of the first year, in order to induce students into research work and close collaboration with the faculty from early stage. From the second year on, a research workshop enables students to present their work and to receive feedback from faculty members. Furthermore, our knowledge centers, Nova Finance Center and NOVAFRICA, enable students to engage in the research projects of faculty members. Please see details in our Research at Nova SBE and Knowledge Centers at Nova SBE webpages.
Nova SBE is a member of the European Doctorate in Economics Erasmus Mundus (EDEEM), a joint degree that gathers leading European universities. Dedicated PhD candidate workshops (Jamborees) and Summer Schools are an integral part of the training. Nova SBE is also a member of the Quantitative Economics Doctorate (QED) network, an exchange program of doctoral studies in economics. It organizes an annual meeting where doctoral students can present their work to an international academic audience.
Our faculty commits to active involvement in the placement of PhD students. Our recent graduates got positions in prestigious international institutions such as University Wisconsin-Madison (USA), Sogang University (South Korea), INSPER (Brazil), Fundação Getúlio Vargas (Brazil), Fondazione Enrico Mattei Venice (Italy), Hanken Business School (Finland), or the European Commission, as well as Portuguese higher-education (Catolica-Lisbon and ISCTE) and public institutions (Bank of Portugal, Ministry of the Economy, Institute for the Administration of Public Debt, Competition Authority).

“I am glad that I chose the PhD program in Economics at NOVA among other offers. My PhD experience at NOVA was invaluable for my career. I would like to thank NOVA’s Economic Department for the unique and encouraging research environment and for opportunities to present my work abroad in Canada, Europe, and the U.S. During these presentations, I acquainted with the top researchers in my field. Nowadays the job market for Ph.D. graduates is very competitive. The unique experience and knowledge gained at NOVA during my Ph.D. journey helped to get several job offers. This is the strong indication of NOVA’s education quality.”

“Studying for a PhD at Nova gave me the opportunity to work with world class researchers that are leading figures in the field of Finance. It was a demanding and challenging experience but in the end I got the satisfaction of seeing my research reaching top-level publications. When I started the program it was beyond my most optimist expectations to see one (possibly more) of my dissertation papers accepted in top four-star journals. Nova has excellent conditions to do world-class research and its PhD program is in that respect at par with those offered in any top university in Europe or the United States.”
