Improving Quality of Care

ABOUT

The aim of the “Improving Quality of Care in Europe” (IQCE) PhD program is to improve the quality and performance of European health care systems. Quality of care may be defined as the improvement of health in relation to the best possible outcome that could have been achieved were current medical knowledge applied. Although improving the quality of care is of utmost importance for European health care systems, previous research provides too little evidence about areas that lack quality of care.

PhD PROGRAM

The European Training Network (ETN) focuses on health economic research to improve the quality of care in Europe and each PhD thesis will focus on one of six dimensions of health care quality as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO): effectiveness, safety, efficiency, access, equitability, and acceptability. As the PhD program is very international, it will provide plenty opportunities for traveling and cultural exchange. Please find more detailed information at www.iqce.eu

PARTNERS

The program is conducted by 7 academic partners who belong to the largest and most prestigious health economic centers in Europe and each partner will take the lead in the respective area of strength in this ETN:

  • University of Southern Denmark
  • University of York, St. Jude Medical

Non-academic partner organisations have been selected to provide a balanced portfolio of different sectors in health care as well as with different resources and abilities required for research, training and dissemination:

  • Department of Health England
  • European Health Economics Association
  • German Association of University Hospitals
  • National Health Care Institute

International Business Summer Course

by Pedro Miguel Martins.

Managers operating in an international environment face challenges that go way beyond those solved by managers who operate within the confines of a country. Portugal, a small open economy that pioneered globalization, has had to face up to these challenges for many centuries: its historical and economic relations with sub-Saharan Africa as well as Latin America attest to it. Nova SBE, the leading Portuguese business school, is uniquely placed to offer a summer school that mixes state-of-the-art short courses on International Management and related subjects with unique knowledge of how internationally-minded Portuguese firms exploit business opportunities. In sum, rigorous academic knowledge blended with an in situ introduction to successful Portuguese firms is what we wish to offer our foreign students. Welcome to Nova SBE!

One of the most important features of the program is the fast-paced rhythm which enables students to visit a lot of important Economic issues.

Students will be introduced to key strategic management frameworks and particular attention will be dedicated to the role and influence of external environmental factors and internal organisational capabilities, on firms’ strategic choices.

Given the remarkable economic development and the increasing importance that some African countries have been experiencing in recent years, and also because of the historical, sociocultural and economic links that Portugal has experienced with some of those countries, we will devote special attention to key challenges and opportunities that managers face when operating in such a context.
