PRME

by Nova SBE.

PRME

Launched at the 2007 UN Global Compact Leaders Summit in Geneva, the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) initiative is the largest organised relationship between the United Nations and business schools, with the PRME Secretariat housed in the UN Global Compact Office.

The mission of PRME is to transform management education, research and thought leadership globally by providing the Principles for Responsible Management Education framework, developing learning communities and promoting awareness about the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.

The Six Principles of PRME are inspired by internationally accepted values, such as the United Nations Global Compact's Ten Principles, and provide an engagement structure for academic institutions to advance social responsibility through incorporating universal values into curricula and research. They seek to establish a process of continuous improvement among institutions of management education in order to develop a new generation of business leaders capable of managing the complex challenges faced by business and society in the 21st century.

The PRME initiative serves as a framework for gradual, systemic change in business schools and management-related institutions, based on three distinctive characteristics of the initiative: continuing improvement, a learning network, and reporting progress to stakeholders. Reporting on progress by participant institutions to stakeholders through Sharing Information on Progress (SIP) reports is an essential part of the active commitment to PRME. SIP reporting provides information on progress achieved in the implementation of PRME, an opportunity for exchanging effective practices, and creates a learning community with other participating institutions.

Double Degrees

by Nova SBE.

Double Degree programs for masters students
At Nova SBE, students have the opportunity to take part in “double-degree” programs with one of our top partner institutions. This suits especially students who want to further their career by obtaining a masters degree from two top institutions as well as students who would like to gain deep international learning experience during their Masters program.

A double degree is an approved combined study program leading to two degrees from two universities. After successful completion of all the program requirements from both universities, a student receives a masters degree from NOVA together with a masters degree from the partner university.

Nova SBE is very selective in the choice of partner universities, adding only high profile, research oriented universities to its list. All of our partners are the leading institutions in their country in the economics and/or business field, and offer great academic opportunities that represent additional benefits for students.

What are the benefits for students?
An increasing number of universities worldwide see the advantages of Double Degree programs and are working to develop more international agreements of this type.
Recently the renowned American magazine Newsweek published an article confirming the growing importance of double degree programs, where students, professors and recruiters share the opinion that double degree programs will benefit students in providing a broad education, increasing skills and career opportunities.
According to an article in the Financial Times Business Education’s Master in Management 2009 report, double degree programs, where participants spend time in two institutions in different countries and are awarded degrees from both institutions, are a very efficient way of gaining international exposure, and gain the desired broad exposure in order to better qualify for the job market.
Due to different national restrictions and differences between universities each double degree program looks different, but usually involves an equal amount of study-time at each university. Credits obtained at both universities within the program will be mutually acknowledged, resulting in a shortening of the required study time compared to acquiring both degrees separately.
Moreover, Nova SBE students pay tuition fees only at Nova SBE, which are very often considerably lower than at the partner institutions.

In today’s international labor market, the international exposure will be highly valued and graduates with degrees obtained in two different countries will be one step ahead of the competition. Besides the life skills, the advantages of a double degree include:

  • Obtain two Master of Science degrees with minimal study delay
  • Experience the “best of both worlds” – each university adds its specialty to the program and thus complements the partner university
  • Experience a different culture, business environment and learning approach
  • Gain greater perspective in addressing international issues
  • Undergo a diverse learning experience through a more international classroom
  • Take part in an internship (this is a feature of some double-degree, not all)
  • Only pay tuition fees at NOVA SBE.

Who can apply?
The selection criteria for these programs are very specific. You should submit your application for these programs when you register in the Masters program, allowing to plan the course schedule according to the academic requirements of Nova SBE and the partner school of your choice.
Once a student of Nova SBE enters a double-degree program, this student becomes also a student of the partner institution. Therefore, the application for the double-degree has to be approved not only by Nova SBE, but also confirmed by the partner institution. Early application allows for quickly solving this issue.
Please be aware that these programs are demanding and more challenging than if you were to pursue a single Masters degree at Nova SBE. This means that only the students with the strongest academic record and the highest levels of ambition and motivation will be selected.

Current Double Degrees

EAESP-FGV (São Paulo, Brasil)

Founded in 1954, the EAESP-FGV is one of the most prestigious Business Schools in Latin America, the first to get the Triple Crown accreditation in that continent. Constantly innovative in its programs, EAESP is located in São Paulo, the leading Brazilian sophisticated and extremely competitive center that boosts an economy that is growing at an amazing rate of 7% per year.

The Double Degree Program with EAESP-FGV is offered in the area of Management and can be completed in two years. Classes are in English, both in Lisbon and in São Paulo. After acceptance, all the documents regarding the validation of the students’ undergraduate diploma must be provided to EAESP, so that the Brazilian legal requirement of recognition of that diploma may be satisfied in order to issue the MSc degree. The planning of the first year courses and credits at Nova SBE is crucial for the success of the double-degree.

Additional information regarding the structure of this Double-Degree can be obtained from the Masters Coordination Office (MCO).

INSPER (São Paulo, Brasil)

INSPER is a recent, high-profile, non-profit educational institution in the area of Business and Economics. The double-degree with INSPER can be obtained in the areas of Management, in Economics and in Finance, by studying the first year at Nova SBE and the second year in São Paulo. After acceptance at the Double-Degree, right after registration at the Masters Program, students must provide the required documents to validate their undergraduate Diploma, according to Brazilian law. Students will go to Brazil in the second year with that process already solved.

• Nova SBE students in the Masters in Management will be given a double-degree by INSPER in Administração.
• Students in the Masters in Economics will be given a double-degree by INSPER in Economics with a major in Applied Macroeconomics.
• Students in the Masters in Finance will be given a double-degree by INSPER in Economics with major in Applied Finance.

Today, the Warsaw School of Economics offers courses leading to Bachelor or Masters degrees to both full-time and extramural students. It also offers doctoral and Postgraduate Programs. Its Finance and Accounting program was ranked in Top 40 European Masters in Management by the Financial Times, in 2008.

It is partner of Nova SBE at the CEMS network, offering as well the MIM program, consistently ranked by the FT as one of the Top 3 pre-experience Masters in Management worldwide.
The double-degree with WSE can be obtained in the area of Management. The selection process happens in the first semester of the Masters program. Joint selection interviews by both Nova SBE and WSE are encouraged. Therefore, the selection process for this double-degree has to be carefully planned. For that reason, early application is required.
The Masters Thesis will be supervised by one supervisor. Students will choose one supervisor from either institution; the reviewer will be selected from the partner institution respectively. The language of the Masters Thesis and courses is always English. Again, Nova SBE students must plan carefully their courses in the first year, allowing for the credits equivalence that will allow them to complete the double-degree in two years. More information is available from the Masters Coordination Office.
