Course 1: Modern and Contemporary History
The purpose of this course is to give an overview of the historical formation of the Portuguese-speaking world. Students will be introduced to the creation of the Portuguese empire in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries up to the decolonizing process, in the nineteenth century (Brazil) and in the twentieth century (the African and remaining Asian colonies). The course will conclude with abrief description of the Portuguese-speaking world today. We expect in this way that students become familiar with the roots of the Portuguese-speaking world.
- The origins of the Portuguese empire;
- The Spanish occupation and the first decline of the empire;
- Decolonization in Brazil (nineteenth century) and in Africa (twentieth century);
- Extension, features and relevance of the Portuguese-speaking world today.

Course 2: International Business
This course aims to prepare students to understand key notions and practices of international management by taking a business and society perspective in the context of globalization.
At the same time, the course introduces practical examples of how Portuguese multi-nationals approach international management, namely in their expansion to Portuguese speaking countries.
The following topics will be analyzed:
- The impact of globalization on business and management;
- Managing across cultures. Reconciling dilemas;
- The impacto f social media in international management;
- Sustainable innovation and the Concept of shared value in international business.

Course 3: Strategy
The aim of this course is to provide students with up-to-date knowledge and practical tools that would enable them to gain deeper understanding of strategy and the strategic management process used firms and other type of organisations.
Students will be introduced to key strategic management frameworks and particular attention will be dedicated to the role and influence of external environmental factors and internal organisational capabilities, on firms’ strategic choices.
Given the remarkable economic development and the increasing importance that some African countries have been experiencing in recent years, and also because of the historical, sociocultural and economic links that Portugal has experienced with some of those countries, we will devote special attention to key challenges and opportunities that managers face when operating in such a context.
We will also facilitate an understanding of effective management practices and strategies that will help you manoeuvre in the African context.

Course 4: Cross-cultural Management
This course is designed to develop a deeper understanding of the issues in managing across cultures with primary focus on Latin America (Brazil) and Sub-Saharan Africa (Angola, Mozambique). First, we will question the importance and relevance of culture in management practice. Then, we will explore methods for discovering culture and develop a framework to diagnose culture whether national, corporate, functional, etc. Next, we will examine the impact of culture on strategy, structure, and human resource management. Finally, we will evaluate different approaches to managing cultural differences and question the role of managers and companies in a global economy.
The course aims at:
- Increasing awareness of one's own culture;
- Providing insight into other cultures;
- Diagnosing culture;
- Demonstrating how culture affects management practice;
- Providing guidelines on managing cultural differences across individuals, in teams and in organizations.
